EXCELLENCE OF THE MONTH OF RAMADAN

FAEZ: Ramadhan is the ninth month of the Muslim calendar. It is considered a very sacred month for the Muslims because it was in this month that the revelation of the Holy Quran began. Ramadhan is also the period whereby all Muslims all over the world observe fasting....restrain from doing the usual things such as eating etc during the day time....just for the sake of Allah.

TEGUH: As Islam is a universal religion, its clocks and calendars are also universal. The timing of daily prayers and the daily routine of fast are based on the journey of the sun, similarly the periods of starting and ending of fasting month (Ramadhan) are based on the phases of the moon.

AKHTAR: The question may be asked if it is necessary for everyone to sight the new moon for commencing and breaking the fast. Sighting of the moon is quite technical and not everyone should sight the moon. At least two reliable persons sight the moon would suffice to be accepted as valid.

MULIA: If the distance between two locations is great, then the sighting of the new moon at one place cannot be held valid for the other.

TEGUH: However Islam permits the use of calculation by mathematicians and astronomers to determine Ramadhan. But there is a long debate on this exercise.

FAEZ: The month of Ramadhan cannot be extended beyond thirty days and cannot become less then twenty-nine days.

AKHTAR: Do not observe voluntary fast for a day (certain scholars mentioned two days) ahead of Ramadhan except if the person who is in the habit of observing a particular fast. He may fast since he is fully conscious of the distinction between the two i.e. voluntary and obligatory fasting.

MULIA: The trend of escaping from taking sahur i.e. supper before dawn, is on the increase. However there is a blessing in taking the meal at that time. Examples of the blessings are (1) it equips the person with enough strength to undergo cheerfully the rigour of the fast, (2) it provides him an opportunity to thank his Lord for the food provided to him.

AKHTAR: The followers of Christianity and Judaism do not observe this practice of sahur.

TEGUH: Exemption is granted to the sick and the travellers during the period of their illness and during their journey, but they are required to fast afterward when they are fully recovered or when the journey ends.

AKHTAR: If anyone dies without completing his obligatory fast, his heir must fast on his behalf.

FAEZ: The essence of piety does not lie in the duration of worship but in cheerful obedience i.e. ikhlas , to the commands of the Master.
