MULIA: It is not permitted to any Muslims to avoid working for a living on the pretext of devoting his life to worship Allah. Or depend on charity while he is able to earn what is sufficient for his own and his family’s needs through his own efforts.
TEGUH: However, sometime asking for financial help from the government or from another individual, or to a stage of begging, is allowable under certain cases. Situation when a man suffers calamity and loses his property, it is permissible for him to ask until he is able to stand on his own feet. Or a man is starving but need three reliable persons from his community to confirm his bad situation.
AKHTAR: It is haram to cultivate harmful plant, like hashish and tobacco (certain scholars say makruh). It is not a valid excuse for a Muslim to say that he is growing the haram plant to sell it to non-Muslims. Remember a Muslim is never permitted to be a party to the propagation of what is haram. This is like rearing pigs in order to sell them to Christians, in Islam it is unlawful. Even a halal crop (e.g. grapes) cannot be sold to non-Muslims if it is known that they will be used as one of the ingredients to make wine.
FAEZ: Muslims cannot confine their involvement in one particular industry only, e.g. agriculture. Thus, in addition to agriculture, Muslims are obligated to engage in other essential industries and professions. Such obligations are termed “the obligations of sufficiency” (fardu kifayah). Every Muslim community must include among its followers, people engaged in every essential industry, in numbers sufficient to meet its needs. If there is a shortage of qualified persons in some fields of essential industry, the entire Muslim community is blameworthy.
MULIA: However, certain specific professions or industries are prohibited by Islam, such as usury related business, gambling, prostitution, erotic arts, making statues, plus manufacturing intoxicants and harmful drugs, among others.
TEGUH: Muslims can seek employment in the government service, but must not accept a job which he is unfit, especially concerning judicial.
AKHTAR: In the view of Islam, the true believers are not those who remain in mosques all day long. The true believers are men of action, whose are able to distinguish that the affairs of the busy world do not make them forget their obligations to their Creator.
