SOLAT
ABRIDGED PRAYER
(PRAYER DURING A JOURNEY)

TEGUH: Abridging a prayer means to perform two rakaat (units) in place of the four rakaat prayer i.e. Zuhur, Asar and Insyak. As for the magrib it maintains three rakaat, and fajar remains two rakaat.

AKHTAR: A traveller begins shortening his solat upon leaving the boundaries of his town. Length of the journey varies among scholars. Some suggested the mileage should be at least 48 miles and others as 52 miles. For easy implementation we normally take the distance cut-off point as 90 kilometers.

MULIA: Certain scholars have the opinion if the traveller intends to stay for four days or more in any specific town, then he will pray the complete prayer without shortening. This is because by his intention to reside for four days or more, he will be more relaxed. The reason for allowing him to shorten his prayer is no longer valid, that is, facing the hardships of travelling.

FAEZ: However if he stays at a place for uncertain period, wondering whether he should leave today or tomorrow or the day after, then he should shorten his prayers for the whole period which could be much longer than the four days duration. Certain scholars put a cap to the maximum number of days at a stretch a person could shorten their prayers, that is nineteen days. Wallahualam. Only Allah Knows the truth.

TEGUH: Prophet Muhammad used to combine zuhur (2 rakaat) with asar (2 rakaat) prayers together on a journey, and also magrib (3 rakaat) with insyak (2 rakaat). And he was not seen performing any voluntary prayers during this time.

MULIA: Certain people refuse to perform abridged prayers because there are so many mosques or places of worship can be found during a journey. But Prophet Muhammad when asked about this answered “ It is a charitable leave which Allah has given you, so accept His charity”.
