Solat constitutes the physical, mental and spiritual submission to Allah which starts by pronouncing “Allahuakhbar” (Allah is Great) and ends with the Salam (salutation of peace).
Purification of the body from impurities before one enters the Solat is obligatory. Purification is attained by using pure water – this is water in its natural, unadulterated state e.g. water from wells, springs, rivers, rainfall and sea water.
However, earth can be used as a purifier in the event of scarcity of water, or the inability to use it because of illness. It is known as Tayammum.
Purity is the key to Solat. Solat is not accepted without purification.
There are two types of external purification, namely:
(1) by removing filth from the worshipper’s garments, body and from the place of prayer,
(2) by performing wuduk (ablution) and Ghusl (bathing),
Wuduk (ablution) is related with minor impurity. This is caused by any act, such as urinating, defecating, passing gas, sleeping etc.
Whereas Ghusl (bathing) meant for major impurity, such as sexual intercourse, sexual discharge and at the end of menses.
When you rise to perform Solat, you need to undertake wuduk (ablution) beforehand. That is, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows and wipe over your heads and (wash) your feet up to the ankles. It can be carried out once, twice or preferable three times for each action.
One should perform Ghusl (complete bath of the whole body) and becomes obligatory which is caused by:
(1) sexual intercourse: meaning the insertion of the male sexual organ into the female sexual organ, whether it is accompanied by the ejaculation of semen or not;
(2) ejaculation : which is the sexual discharge whether through intercourse or wet dream for males and females as well;
(3) cessation of menstruation;
(4) one who embraces Islam must take a bath; and
(5) upon the death of any Muslim it becomes obligatory to wash his body.
Asma binti Abu Bakar (daughter of the 1st Calipah and sister-in-law of our Prophet Muhammad) narrated that a woman asked Prophet Muhammad (saw) what to do with a cloth soiled with the blood of menses. He replied that she should rub it off with her fingers and put it in the water and rub it in order to remove the traces of blood and then pour water over it. Then she can offer prayer in it.
The Prophet Muhammad (saw) performed several prayers with the same Wuduk.
Safwan bin Assal narrated when they were on a journey, the Prophet Muhammad (saw) ordered them not to take off their goatskin socks (leather socks which cover the ankles) for 3 days and 3 nights if they needed to answer the call of nature or to sleep, but to only wipe over them in performing wuduk. He, however, ordered them to take off the socks if they needed to take a bath because of Janabah/Junub.
What invalidates wuduk?
Any discharge of urine, prostatic fluid, discharge from the urethral, sperm, stool, or passing of gas invalidates the wuduk.
Thus it is not necessary to renew the wuduk on the suspicious of passing wind unless one is absolutely sure that he has passed wind i.e. because of a smell or sound.
Status of wuduk after sleeping.
As long as one’s eyes are open i.e. he is awake, then he can control his passing of wind.
However, once he falls asleep, he can no longer control whether or not he will pass wind. Thus, it is necessary to renew the wuduk after waking up from sleep.
But lightly doze off is excusable and can perform solat without renewing the wuduk.
